New SAT Science Score in 2027: Science Practices and Foundations Explained

Starting in spring 2027, SAT score reports can include a Science Practices and Foundations score from 65 to 95. Here’s how it’s calculated, who sees it, and whether you need to prepare.

What is the new SAT science score?

It’s called Science Practices and Foundations. In its 2026–27 score report data layout for high schools and districts, College Board says that starting with spring 2027 administrations, the score will be reported on a 65–95 scale.

College Board describes it as a measure of science achievement in two parts: how well you apply common science practices, and how well you show the math skills that research links to success in science. Its Texas partnership page puts it more plainly. The score reflects practices such as analyzing data and evaluating evidence, along with the quantitative skills behind science and STEM classes.

Is there a science section on the SAT now?

No. You still take two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, in 2 hours 14 minutes. The SAT testing rules call it a cross-section score calculated from existing Reading and Writing and Math questions, not a new test section, so it adds no testing time. For the rest of the test layout, see our 2027 digital SAT format guide.

Who sees the science score?

This is the part most students care about. According to College Board’s testing rules:

  • Your school and district receive it if it’s on your report.
  • Your state receives it in some cases.
  • Colleges and universities do not. College Board says it will not be sent to them.

The testing rules also say your report may include the score, so check your own report after a spring 2027 test. Since colleges won’t receive it, it shouldn’t change which test you take or how many times you take it.

How is it different from the old Analysis in Science score?

The SAT has measured science skills inside its regular sections for years. Some states already received an Analysis in Science score. College Board’s March 2026 guide for Kentucky describes it as coming from select science-related Reading and Writing and Math questions, on a 50–70 scale with an average around 60.

The scales don’t line up, so a 60 on the old score doesn’t translate to any particular number on the new one.

Which SAT questions feed the science score?

College Board hasn’t published a question-by-question list for the new score. Based on its own descriptions, these are the skills that matter most:

Do you need to study for the SAT science score?

Not separately. Every question behind it already counts toward your Reading and Writing or Math score, and colleges won’t receive the science score. Studying for your total score covers it.

That said, data and evidence questions are worth extra attention because they help both scores. Some habits that help:

  • Read the graph first. Check the title, axis labels and units before the answer choices.
  • Match the claim exactly. On quantitative evidence questions, the right answer supports the specific claim, not just something true about the data.
  • Track units. Write the units next to each number on rate and conversion questions.
  • Review by skill. After a practice test, sort your misses by skill to see whether data questions are a pattern. Our practice test review guide walks through it.

Common SAT science score questions

Does the SAT have a science section now?

No. The SAT still has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math. College Board calculates the Science Practices and Foundations score from questions already in those sections, so it adds no testing time.

Will colleges see my SAT science score?

No. College Board’s SAT testing rules say the Science Practices and Foundations score will not be sent to colleges and universities. If it appears on your report, it goes to your school, your district and, in some cases, your state.

Does the science score change my 1600 total?

No. It is a separate score on its own 65–95 scale. Your total score is still the sum of your Reading and Writing and Math section scores, from 400 to 1600.

When does the SAT science score start?

College Board says it will be reported starting with spring 2027 SAT administrations. The November 7 and December 5, 2026 SATs come before that. The spring 2027 weekend dates are March 6, May 1 and June 5.

What is a good SAT science score?

College Board has not published averages or percentiles for the 65–95 scale yet. The older Analysis in Science score used a 50–70 scale with an average around 60, but that is a different scale, so don’t compare the two directly.

Is the SAT science score the same as ACT science?

No. ACT science is an optional 40-minute section with its own questions, and its score appears on reports sent to colleges. The SAT science score comes from questions you already answer and is not sent to colleges.
