Digital SAT Format in 2027: What Stays the Same and What’s New

The 2027 digital SAT keeps 98 questions, 2 hours 14 minutes and adaptive modules. See the 2026–27 Bluebook updates, spring 2027 dates, fees and score release.

Is the SAT changing in 2027?

Not in what it tests. As of October 4, 2026, College Board has not announced any change to the SAT’s questions, timing, adaptive design or 400–1600 score scale for spring or fall 2027. If you take the SAT in 2027, you take the same digital test students have taken since 2024.

What did change for the 2026–27 school year is the testing app and test-day logistics. Those updates are small, but a few of them can catch you out on test day if your device isn’t ready.

What does the 2027 SAT look like?

The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing first and Math second, with a 10-minute break between them. Each section is split into two timed modules. You take it in College Board’s Bluebook app at a school or test center.

SectionQuestionsTimeModulesAverage per question
Reading and Writing5464 minutesTwo 32-minute modulesAbout 71 seconds
Math4470 minutesTwo 35-minute modulesAbout 95 seconds
Total982 hours 14 minutesFour timed modules

The per-question averages are simple division, not a College Board rule. They’re useful as a pacing check. A Reading and Writing question that takes you three minutes is borrowing time from two others.

How do the adaptive modules decide your test?

Your first module in each section has a mix of easier and harder questions. When it ends, Bluebook uses your results to route you to a second module that is, on average, harder or easier. Reading and Writing and Math route separately, so a strong Math start doesn’t depend on how Reading and Writing went.

Inside a module you can skip around, mark questions and change answers until time runs out. Once a module closes, it’s locked. Plan your review time module by module rather than for the whole section.

What’s new in Bluebook for 2026–27?

College Board lists these updates for the current testing year, which runs through June 2027:

  • Resizable calculator. You can resize the built-in Desmos calculator in the Math section.
  • Clearer reference sheet and images. The Math reference sheet and images are easier to see and use.
  • Windows 11 only. Bluebook now requires Windows 11 on Windows laptops.
  • Chromebooks need verified mode. Bluebook runs on a Chromebook only when verified mode is turned on. School-managed Chromebooks usually handle this. Check a personal one early.
  • Waitlist in the U.S. If your preferred date or center is full, you can join a waitlist and be placed automatically when a seat opens.
  • New PSAT practice tests. Full-length PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 practice tests are now in Bluebook.

Students approved for embedded text-to-speech take the weekend SAT at a test center unless another school-based accommodation applies, and students using text-to-speech or a screen reader need their own wired, non-Bluetooth headphones.

The calculator policy can change once a year, and College Board announces any change before the August test. If you plan to bring your own calculator for fall 2027, check the policy again in the summer. Our Desmos guide covers the built-in calculator.

When can you take the SAT in 2027?

These are College Board’s spring 2027 national dates. Deadlines close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.

College Board also lists anticipated dates for fall 2027: August 28, September 18, October 9, November 6 and December 4. Those aren’t final yet, and deadlines haven’t been posted. Our 2027 test dates guide shows how to space a first test and a retake, and the test dates page lists every current date.

How much does the SAT cost in 2026–27?

Registration is $68. Registering during the late window adds $38, and changing your test center costs $34. Students testing outside the U.S. pay an extra international fee. If cost is a barrier, ask your counselor about an SAT fee waiver. See fee waivers for how they work with Hourly Prep.

Is there an at-home SAT or an essay in 2027?

No to both. The digital SAT is given at schools and test centers with a proctor, not at home. College Board stopped offering the SAT Essay on weekend tests after June 2021, so the 2027 test is the two sections above.

How should you prepare for a 2027 SAT?

  1. Take an official Bluebook practice test first. It shows your starting point on the real interface, with the same modules and tools.
  2. Pick a test date, then a backup. A spring date with a later retake option takes pressure off the first sitting.
  3. Practice by skill between full tests. Use short sets to work on the skills your practice test flagged. Our SAT study plan guide lays this out by weeks.
  4. Rehearse the device. Install Bluebook on the device you’ll test with and run its check well before test day.

Where does Hourly Prep fit?

Bluebook is where you rehearse the full test. Hourly Prep is for the days in between. The free app gives you short SAT practice sets on a test-style screen, an explanation for every question, and one full SAT practice test. Premium adds an adaptive study plan, an AI tutor, 30+ SAT practice tests, 10,000+ practice problems and score estimates.

Start with the free app, keep official Bluebook tests in your plan, and use your results to decide what to study next.

How to Use the Desmos Calculator on the Digital SAT

Bluebook includes a Desmos graphing and scientific calculator for the whole SAT Math section, and you may bring an approved handheld instead. Use it to graph equations, find intersections and run regressions, but skip it when quick mental math or algebra is faster.
