SAT vs. ACT in 2027: Pace, Scoring, Cost and a Plan for Juniors

Compare the SAT and ACT for 2027 by time per question, adaptivity, scoring, fees and spring dates, then use one official practice test of each to choose.

Which is easier in 2027, the SAT or the ACT?

Neither, for everyone. Both tests measure similar reading, writing and math skills, and colleges that consider scores generally accept either one. What differs is the experience: how fast you have to move, how passages are built, and whether the test adapts to you. The right choice is the one where your score is higher after a fair, timed attempt at each.

Neither test has announced format changes for 2027, so the comparison below should hold for every 2027 test date.

The time-per-question row is the one students feel most. The SAT gives you more time per question. The ACT asks you to move faster, especially in English, but its questions are often quicker to answer.

Who tends to do better on the SAT?

  • Students who like reading a short passage and answering one question about it.
  • Students who use a graphing calculator well, since Desmos is built in for all of Math.
  • Students who need a little more time per question to work carefully.

Who tends to do better on the ACT?

  • Students who read longer passages efficiently and like answering several questions from one text.
  • Students who work quickly and stay accurate under a steady pace.
  • Students who prefer paper, where it’s offered, or a test that doesn’t adapt.
  • Students who want a separate science or STEM score to show strength in science.

These are tendencies, not rules. Plenty of students who expect to prefer one test score better on the other. That’s why the timed comparison matters more than a quiz or a hunch. If you want a starting point, try our six-question SAT or ACT quiz.

How do you compare an SAT score with an ACT score?

Use the official ACT/SAT concordance from ACT and College Board. The current version was released in 2018. ACT says enhanced ACT Composites line up with older Composites closely enough that the current concordance can still be used, and no updated table has been released. Our score converter applies the official table.

A 2027 SAT vs. ACT plan for juniors

  1. This fall: take the PSAT/NMSQT if your school offers it. It uses the same digital format as the SAT, so it doubles as SAT practice.
  2. Before winter break: take one official practice test of each. Use Bluebook for the SAT and ACT’s free practice test. Take them on different days, with real timing.
  3. By January: convert and choose. Put both results on the same scale with the concordance. Also note which test you finished and which one ran you out of time.
  4. Spring: take your first official test. The SAT is offered March 6, May 1 and June 5. The ACT is offered February 27, April 10, June 12 and July 10.
  5. Fall of senior year: retake if needed. Both tests list projected fall 2027 dates. See the 2027 test dates guide.

Does your state already give you one of the tests?

Some states and districts give juniors the SAT or ACT during the school day. That sitting can settle the decision, or at least give you a first official score without a Saturday. Policies change. Virginia, for example, began requiring districts to offer the SAT to juniors during the school day in 2026–27. Ask your counselor which test your school gives and when.

Do colleges prefer the SAT or the ACT?

Colleges that consider scores generally accept both. Some colleges have started requiring scores again, and some now accept only the SAT or ACT where they once took other exams. Yale, for example, stopped accepting AP and IB scores in place of the SAT or ACT starting with the 2026–27 application cycle. Check each college’s own admissions page. Our guide to colleges that require scores lists policies we checked at the source.

How Hourly Prep helps with the decision

Hourly Prep’s free plan includes one SAT practice test, one ACT practice test and short daily practice sets for both exams. Use them alongside the official tests to see how each format feels before you commit.

Hourly Prep doesn’t pick the test for you or predict an official score. Once you choose, it builds a daily routine for the SAT or the ACT around your test date and the time you have. Premium adds an adaptive study plan and an AI tutor.

Common SAT vs. ACT questions for 2027

Should I prepare for both tests?

Usually not after you choose. Splitting time slows progress on both. Studying both makes sense when your school gives one test and you prefer the other, or when your practice results are nearly tied.

What if my practice scores are tied?

Pick the test whose weak spots look easier to fix. A few repeated grammar errors are easier to fix than running out of time in every section. Test dates and your school’s free test day can also break the tie.

Is the 2026 SAT vs. ACT guide out of date?

No. Our original SAT vs. ACT guide walks through the diagnostic process in more depth. This version adds pacing, fees, spring 2027 dates and a junior-year timeline.
