How to answer it
- Write the equation from the words: price times quantity for each item.
- Substitute the value you’re given.
- Solve for the other variable and check it makes sense.
Worked example
An original question in the SAT format, already answered.
Student tickets cost $8 and adult tickets cost $12. A group spent exactly $96 and bought 6 student tickets.
How many adult tickets did the group buy?
- A3
- B4
- C6
- D8
Answer: B. 8(6) + 12a = 96, so 48 + 12a = 96 and 12a = 48, which gives a = 4.
The most common trap
Dividing the total by one price. Account for both kinds of tickets first.
