After the PSAT

Got your PSAT score? Here’s what it means.

Your score report shows a Reading and Writing score and a Math score, each from 160 to 760. Here’s how to turn them into a Selection Index and decide what to do next.

1

Find your Selection Index

Index =2 × RW + Math10
206

(2 × 680 + 700) ÷ 10 = 206, on a 48–228 scale.

2

Compare it with past cutoffs

Semifinalist cutoffs are set state by state, and the ones for the fall 2026 test come out in September 2027. Until then, our estimated ranges show where each state has landed since the PSAT went digital.

Pick your next test

The PSAT/NMSQT has the same two sections as the SAT, so your report already points to the SAT skills to work on. If you’re weighing the ACT too, start with a few quick questions.

Before you compare

  • Use the Selection Index on your official report. Practice tests, including ours, don’t produce one.
  • Your state is usually where you attend school. Boarding schools and schools outside the U.S. have their own rules.
  • No index guarantees Semifinalist standing or a scholarship. The estimates are planning ranges, not official cutoffs.
